D&E Department

The Development & Engineering (D&E) team drives the technology, innovation and new development of data center infrastructure across Vantage’s companywide portfolio.  D&E evaluate new sites, drives cost and schedule in line with corporate goals and serve as subject matter experts across the entire project lifecycle from concept through commissioning.  The team collaborates with Sales, Operations and management along the way.  D&E also work hand in hand with the Construction team to come up with a vertically integrated design and ensures new and existing standards and designs are executed effectively.  One thing that distinguishes Vantage is that our technical staff is given the responsibility and authority to directly drive tangible results.  Our team can align long-term operational sustainability with value engineering and cost metrics to deliver products aligned with corporate goals unlike external resources.  This approach empowers each member of the team to drive high-impact decisions and results.

Position Description

With seven active campuses and additional planned expansion Vantage is looking for a proven leader to grow and scale the engineering division within the company.  The growing team consists of electrical/mechanical engineers and subject matter experts (SMEs) at varying experience levels. The successful candidate will be able to grow and scale a team that has exceptional design capability and a strong reputation within the industry amongst both customers and contractors alike. As Vice President of Engineering, your responsibilities will include engineering operations oversight and supporting data center projects of increasing size and complexity.  You will be responsible for driving product innovation and the employee think tank that fuels internal IP.  Collaboration and integration in the sales lifecycle process including client interface is integral to the role.  As Vantage continues to expand you will peer with internal groups focused on cost and schedule reduction to integrate change management and product optimization into new and ongoing projects, while providing lessons learned into the overall feedback loop for analysis and modification.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee the management and administration of design and engineering functions across the company, ensuring projects comply to design guidelines and standards
  • Manage a team of engineering subject matter experts across all of Vantage’s active markets
  • Drive teams to execute all phases of design engineering including site assessment, design review, basis of design, sequence of operations, construction administration activities and commissioning
  • Provide thought leadership to drive Vantage owned IP, product development and critical infrastructure that is industry leading from a build cost perspective while maintaining highest levels of resiliency

Duties

  • Manage engineering activities and provide engineering support from concept through commissioning across Vantage’s portfolio of construction projects leveraging internal and external resources
  • Own resource allocation and project work flow for direct reports and third-party engineering resources
  • Encourage and foster a team-oriented environment through positive feedback
  • Support project management team to establish project budgets, analyze design impacts on build costs and submit approval packages to executive team
  • QA/QC work products of direct reports and confirm accuracy. Manage inputs and delivery of work products from internal team members to ensure that new data center spaces comply with all applicable requirements (BOD, specifications, code, lease, etc.)
  • Drive decisions and report project status via reports/presentations to management and stakeholders
  • Coordinate with site operations to define project requirements and design criteria and provide support for any issues that arise once critical infrastructure is in operation
  • Support sales in customer engagement and fulfillment of requirements as tied to leases and manage delivery in accordance with leases
  • Develop, refine and implement processes and policies for new product research, comparison and ultimately green lighting deployment and actualization into product offering
  • Stay abreast of new technologies/opportunities to innovate using concepts across multiple industries
  • Ensure lessons learned are held and placed in the feedback loop to drive continuous improvement
  • Evaluate, manage and coach performance for your team; elicit feedback from others to stay calibrated

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited university or college, required
  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited university or college, preferred
  • 10-15 years of experience in management role required, 15 to 20 years preferred
  • Data Center experience is required
  • Experience in CSA (civil, structural, architectural) and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) design, engineering and construction is required
  • Experience in leading and directing work with direct reports is required
  • Travel required is expected to be 10-15% but may increase over time as the business evolves
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively present information to executive management, operations, sales engineering and finance and drive output of department staff
